DAMARISCOTTA, Maine \endash Jean H. Newell, died peacefully surrounded by family May 16, 2009, in Damariscotta, Maine, at the age of 83.

Born Jan. 7, 1926, in Waterbury, Conn., to Etta and Adolph Hespelt. A graduate of Crosby High School (1943), Jean earned her RN from Waterbury Hospital and BS (1976) and MS (1980) degrees in psychology from Southern Connecticut State University. She worked as a private duty and coronary care nurse at Waterbury Hospital and attended St. John's Episcopal Church serving as a trustee.

Jean moved to Wiscasset, Maine, in early 1980s, attended St. Andrew's Episcopal Church and was a member of The Miracles, a woman's support group. There she worked as a counselor in private practice and at Augusta Mental Health Institute. In her retirement, Jean volunteered with Hospice.

Jean enjoyed many activities: skiing, golf, boating, swimming, playing bridge, painting, socializing, music, fine food and travel. She was never at a loss for a laugh or an opinion, both of which she generously shared with all.

Mrs. Newell was predeceased by her ex-husband, David Newell Sr., and is survived by her sister, Gloria Carlson of Bethlehem, Conn; three sons, Dave Newell Jr. and wife, Claire, of Cheshire, Conn., Scott Newell and wife, Alice, of Ipswich, Mass., Carter Newell and wife, Kaity, of Damariscotta, Maine; nine grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and two nephews.


A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on July 18 at St. Andrews Episcopal Church, Newcastle, Maine.
